Action Asia 3 Day Marathon in VietNam

On October 1, 2, 3 Dr. Cosman joined the Action Asia team to care for the athletes at the 3 day Action Asia off-road marathon in Vietnam, in and around Da Nang.  This involved hydration advise, chiropractic adjustments, ankle taping, muscle therapy and  first aid including blister taping.

Michael Maddess of Action Asia made multiple visits to the area and marked the course, only to have it washed away the day before the race by a major typhoon.  The site became isolated due to washed out bridges and roads and high rivers.  The ordeal that Michael Maddess went through to get to the site to recover his passport and then return back to the new race hotels was hairy to say the least (the local guide/escorts refused to accompany him due to the danger).   The website for Action Asia Events is www.actionasiaevents.com

Sport Injury Care for Hong Kong Winling Basketball Club (November 2008)

Winling Basketball Club has a long term reputation as a solid contender and champion in both Hong Kong leagues, and Asian tournaments. Dr. David Cosman has worked with Winling for most of his 15 years in Hong Kong performing many functions. Other than team doctor and therapist, his duties have included assistant coaching, scouting for talent, and working in management.

As a scout and assistant manager, Cosman recruited Canadian coach Tim Darling, and scouted for 2 American professional players who might bolster the club in a 2008 international tournament. Cosman successfully arranged for Doug Thomas and Sean Banks to join Winling. This upgraded Winling team overwhelmingly defeated Japans’ and Koreas’ professional club teams at the Fall 2008 ABA tournament in China, where teams were limited to two imported players.

In the last ten years, Hong Kong basketball has lost ground to most Asian countries, apparently by denying talented athletes Western coaching techniques that have progressively advanced. In 2002, the HK men’s national team made the quarter finals at the Asian Games under 3 western coaches including Gary Boyson who subsequently became a CBA coach and is presently an International Scout for the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers (congrats Gary!). Lately, the same basic Hong Kong team under local coaching did not even qualify to play in the Asian Championships this year. Dr. Cosman said that he would feel sad for the athletes, but many of the athletes claim that they do not like to work hard and think that they are too good to learn fundamentals that a western coach would impose on them in practice. Now that is sad.

Team Win at Marathon des Sables: Victory for Chuck Cosman, William Davies & Anton Venceli

Dr. Marathon des Sables is one of the toughest ultramarathons on this planet. Chuck and his 2 Eurosport teammates competed with approximately 800 distance runners, and placed FIRST as a team. They crossed 254 kilometres of the Moroccan desert on foot in just six days including 95 kilometers on one day. It is like running six marathons in 5 days. Chuck Cosman, 26, was the top Canadian, finishing in 16th-place. His teammates were strong, as William Davies placed 13th and Anton Venceli placed an amazing 4th.

“I always say that one of the major reasons I put myself through the pain involved in multi-day racing is for the intense feeling you get when you cross the finish line,” he wrote in an e-mail from his home in Hong Kong, where he’s been living for more than a year.

“This race was no exception and I felt an incredible sense of relief when I finished the final-day of the marathon.  My legs felt like bricks and I was completely depleted of energy, so i knew I had given it my all” .

Chuck is now based in England but travels the globe working for Orca, manufacturers of sports apparel, specializing in triathlon wear. Orca makes the world’s fastest wet suit.

Taking Care Of Nurses

Dr.  David Cosman delivered a 3 week lecture series at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Kowloon. He spoke on general injuries including back and neck pain.  The attendees were nurses, occupational therapists and physical therapists.  The lectures emphasize identifying common causes of injuries, and prevention, as well as treatment options.   The goal of these lectures was not aimed directly at patient care, rather for care-workers to care for themselves instead of working through pain that they often have.

Dr. Cosman Does Not Renew His Licence To Practice Medicine In Shanghai

Dr. Cosman decided to not renew his licensed to practice medicine in the Chen Xin Hospital in Shanghai.  Cosman Orthotics is still the official foot orthotics supplier for the hospital, however Dr. Cosman is very focused on the Hong Kong clinic and will limit his Shanghai trips to “social outings”.  Dr. Cosman works and consults with various chiropractors and therapists in Shanghai.

Dr. Sonny Jamieson Uy of Manila

Dr.  Sonny is a registered doctor of chiropractic in Hong Kong, and  is on staff at the Cosman Health Group.  Based in Manila, he attends the Hong Kong clinic various times throughout the year.

Israel’s Aaron Botzer Attends Hong Kong Open Windsurfing Championships

The Hong Kong Open Windsurfing Championships takes place November 20 to 24, 2008.  This international event is always smoothly run by perhaps the best organized and all around best sport associations in Asia – the Wind Surfing Association of Hong Kong.  This competition attracts international athletes, and the WSAHK rises to the occasion and brings in a world class jury, including Aaron Botzer of Israel.   Aaron is the president of the windsurfing arm of the International Sailing Federation.    He confirmed to me that WSAHK treats their athletes to international windsurfing coaching and experiences.  The local judges are taught by internationally renowned judges.   This association and its executive certainly do bring in international standards and allows its international coaches to “do what they are paid to do”.  This allows progression of the sport, and this is a rare occurrence in Hong Kong, and there is a reason why Hong Kong won Gold in the Olympics in this sport and continues to do well.

I appreciate your comment. This observation that you mentioned is accurate! The forefoot for many a foot will not stay in the same plane as the rearfoot.
Ground reaction force ensures this when walking/running, and the talus and whole lower extremity can “fall” into this hole.
And that is why in cases of forefoot planed deviation, I keep the orthotic shell up in that plane, and add forefoot posting. We go 50% correction max. It is plenty. For patients who need forefoot posting, we give them forefoot posting. It is a clinical call that most health care professionals either miss, or do not make.
